Reflections of a Constant Monk

Poetry, Parables and Live Music

Format

The piece consists of 22 short poems – some in semi-haiku form – declaimed/sung by Lee Gershuny against the backdrop of a specially commissioned score played live by a trio of musicians assembled for the purpose calling themselves Monk’s Mirrors. The score was developed by the three musicians based on ideas proposed by the cellist Robin Mason.

Synopsis

With music and poetry from the heart, the performance brings to life the adventures of a modern Monk facing various familiar ripples in the stream of life: being overweight, feeling lost, meeting a bully and not knowing what to do. Each “ripple” allows the Monk to discover a surprising insight that is both simple and complete in that moment.

Like the rest of us, the Monk is sometimes confused, but with an endless curiosity and freedom to see beauty in the darkest moment, manages to express a wit and wisdom that often amuse, surprise and move us.

Ultimately, the Monk’s religion, gender, culture and background don’t matter at all – he is the Everyman and Everywoman – bewildered and bedazzled by the same things as the rest of us.
